BC Would elect Obama if he was running in Canada

An Ipsos Reid poll of potential voters found the U.S. Democratic presidential challenger is the clear choice of British Columbians looking for a political leader. When 1,400 British Columbians were asked to include Obama and John McCain among their possible choices for prime minister, 42 per cent of them chose Obama, well ahead of Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who attracted support from 29 per cent of those polled.

When British Columbians were asked who they would chose as president of the U.S. if they were able to vote, 80 per cent chose Obama, while 20 per cent chose McCain.

Persons polled by Ipsos Reid were asked to ignore the obvious fact that Obama and McCain were running for president in the Nov. 4 U.S. election and answer as if they were running for prime minister in the Oct. 14 Canadian election.

When British Columbians were asked which of the two national campaigns would “have more of an impact on you personally,” 69 per cent said the Canadian election and only 11 per cent chose the U.S.

When it came to which campaign was more interesting, British Columbians said they had far more interest in what was going on south of the 49th parallel. Fifty-eight per cent indicated they found the U.S. campaign more interesting and only 21 per cent picked the Canadian campaign. The remaining 21 per cent said they were equally interesting.

As uninteresting as British Columbians find the Canadian campaign, however, they claimed they will be more likely to tune into the Canadian leaders’ debate than the U.S. leaders’ debate.

The poll found that 58 per cent of British Columbians said they expect to watch the Canadian leaders’ debate, compared with only 43 per cent who expected to watch the U.S. presidential debate.
